The Union spends hours upon hours negotiating a contract. If these negotiations didn't take place then teachers' wages, beneftis, sick days, etc. would not be as good as they are. That is common sense. If School districts were willing to offer the current contracts on their own accord then why in the hell don't they just do it right away and save everyone days and days in the negotiation room?
So it's a fact that because of the teacher's union, teachers have a better contract than the district would otherwise offer. So now you have teacher's opting out of the union and not paying dues. Are they gonna get a different contract? Because if not, then they are still a part of the union. They're just freeloading.
In 6 years of teaching in my district, I was moved to a different school FOUR times. High school, middle school, alternative school. Different grades and different curriculum. So ya, good luck with the whole idea of "I wrote my lesson plans in year one and then just tweeked them." I had to learn new curriculum and create new plans all the time.
In my 6th year I still make under 40k (with a degree that takes 5 years to earn). We haven't got raises in almost 4 years now. Last year we took a 20 week pay cut that nearly qualified me for FOOD STAMPS. I had a phone interview with the Food Assistance program and was told that my salary was indeed low enough to qualify me for some food assisstance but that I had too much in savings and CDs in the bank to qualify.
Ya if I stay in teaching for another 20 years (and yearly pay increases get re-instituted) then I eventually will make good money. I can tell you there's no way in hell I'm staying in teaching for another 20 years and anyone who does deserves everything they get.
I would also love it if anyone could give me ONE good reason why police and firemen are exempt from this law.
Unions don't have to represent non-union employees in negotiations.
Band of brothers mentality, according to those in the know - those facing life and death situations all need to be on the same side.
My friends are in their 5th year in the lowest paying district in ottawa county, and make 55k a piece.
So there will be two separate contracts for union and non-union employees then?
Well great for your friends.
Starting salary in my district was 33k. For 3 years we haven't seen any pay increase. Thus I'm still under 40k in my 6th year.
During our 20 week temporary pay cuts last year i was making less than 400 a week in take home pay.

That's simple. The general public respects police and firemen. If you piss them off there would a considerable amount of backlash.

No. One contract. The non-union members would not be able to vote on ratification. They would be subject to the terms.
OK so the union is going to do their best to negotiate a good contract for its members.
Its members will then vote that contract through if it meets their approval.
Then non-union members, who paid no dues, will benefit from all the work the union people put in to bargain on their behalf. (Maybe it isn't "technically" on their behalf but if they are subject to the contract then it is on their behalf by default).
How are they not still part of the union?! The #1 job of a union is to negotiate a contract. If the union is negotiating the contract that YOU are subject to then you are linked to that union whether you want to be or not. To me RTW just seems like a right to freeload.
Spoken like somebody with absolutely zero concept of what educators actually DO. I took 10 credits this summer and worked as well. That equated to roughly two weeks of actual vacation.

I don't know if most people realize that as a condition of employment, teachers have to continually earn college credits which they pay for out of pocket.
Right, they don't believe that they should respect the people that they trust to educate their kids, which is a shame. If anybody here thinks that teaching is easy, then you're more than welcome to come do my job for a day.
Having two contracts would cause a greater disparity for union employees. Employers would grant larger wage increases/benefits to the non-union employees, which would cause membership to decline. In the case of RTW, the non-union employees do not have any right to vote over any union business, which include a strike vote, wage increases or concessions, etc.
You are right that all employees would have the benefit of the same contract, some without paying. However, those that do not pay cannot receive anything additional than what is provided for by the CBA.
I had to pay for my law degree out of my own pocket just to be eligible to take the bar exam. Who would've thought?
And once you passed the Bar and became a lawyer were you forced to keep earning college credits in order to maintain your accreditation?
For which they will automatically get a bump of 6-8k upon completion of a master's degree. In no other business will you get a bump in pay for that. It certainly may open doors to promotional opportunities, but it will not automatically bring you a bump in pay.
Personally, I think this is all a sham, where the Educational Industrial Complex coordinates with the unions to get this into the laws, they are simply rent seekers. In any other job, if your company thought you needed training, they would send you to classes or seminars for it. I don't understand what changes year to year so much that one needs to contiously be updated on how to teach a kid to read. If you've been doing it for 10 years, I am pretty comfortable you know what works and what doesn't, and some sham master's course at Oakland/Wayne State/Grand Valley/On line or whereever isn't going to make a diff. However, a whole industry has popped up and it needs customers, so they lobby the lawmakers to get this in, and then the teachers unions use it as a chip in bargaining to get more wages. So you go, you pay, but you will get paid back. Are teachers better as a result? Doubtful, but a lot of people get to be "employed".
Yes, we should be worried we can't maintain the excellence that is our current educational system.
I agree with everything you said. One of the many reasons why I'm probably leaving the teaching profession. Masters ed classes are a joke and I don't want to jump through hoops and waste my time for something that's not gonna improve my teaching abilties.
I'll just add that while the pay increase after buying your masters is nice, you still need to continue your educational credits afterwards. In the end it is still a net gain, true. Although you better like the district you are in because districts don't want to hire people who already have masters and need to be paid more.
I don't blame the Unions for bargaining for higher wages for a Masters degree teacher when the union's not the one forcing teachers to go out and buy the unecessary degree.
That doesn't make teachers unique or special. Plenty of folks need continuing education, hours, credits, etc.
No, but I do have to take CLE (continuing legal education) classes for as long as I want to keep my law license and also continuing education courses for both my real estate license and my mediator certification. These courses are expensive and out of pocket since I am self-employed. Additionally each license has an annual fee...i.e. the FL bar charges $265/yr. Then I get to buy my own malpractice insurance each year (approx $1,500 this year) and the policy increases every year. So I do have to pay a lot of money every year just for the privilege of working so the feds can take it and redistribute it to people that don't feel like busting their asses to succeed in life.
Look, I value teachers and the job they do, but I dislike the unions and am glad they are getting theirs.
People will be able be non union and work along side people who pay in, but still enjoy the same benefits - like taxes.

Unions have always thrived on violence and intimidation. So what might happen if a a non-union cop needs backup and gee, that backup takes a bit longer to arrive? A non-union fireman is in falls through a floor in a burning building and gee, hey did anyone see Dave?
