First Real Job and my hiring manager leaves

  • I just graduated from the school of packaging this past May. I was hired on the 13th of June and it just came to my attention that my hiring boss has left the company. I moved all the way down to North Carolina to work for him. He worked for P&G for 25 years, I was hoping to have him help me get into that company but with him leaving less than 6 months into my job It doesn't look very promising. The co-worker that I was working with is now my new boss. He is 25 and doesn't have much experience from outside this company. I don't know if I should start refreshing my resume and look elsewhere or to stay with the company and see what happens in the next few months. Any thoughts or opinions would be helpful.

    I also invest a lot of time and money to move down here as well.

    Hold on until July, get some experience. You may be surprised. They may hire a new manager if the new guy doesn't cut it anyway. There is a big world and Proctor and God isn't the end all be all for everyone. If it were they wouldn't hire as much as they do.

    A buddy went to work for Philips a few years ago. About 3 weeks after he was hired they were at a national training meeting and his regional / hiring manager didn't show up for the group breakout on Day 2. About an hour later they get a call in the room asking where the hell he and the rest of the region guys are. That's when they were told their manager was let go that morning.

    First time he had ever seen a company fly a manager into a national meeting to fire him. Now my buddy is a regional mgr for Philips and jokes he's glad they do 90% of their meeting online.

    This type of thing happens often. People come and go, most of the time unexpectedly. I've had hiring managers leave shortly after I came on board.

    Don't tie your future to any one individual. Yes, it would've been nice to have him as a mentor, but very few people have that luxury.

    Be your own man. Make your own decisions.

  • Thanks for the input. I work for a small fulfillment company and basically makes the big P&G displays that you see in the stores.

    My apartment lease doesn't end until end of August.

    Another thing, the old boss left because he didn't feel that the company was listening to him on how we need to change things around here. He felt fustrated and just left.

    If a long time employee leaves for the reason you stated, start looking for a new gig now. That company is headed nowhere.

    He was not a long time employee. He joined last october. It seems that the company was not listening to him

    That should still tell you that the company isn't heading in the right direction. Why hire someone then ignore them?

    I work in Burlington. I live in Durham, about 15-20 mins away from Raleigh.

    This is the best advice one can give. I learned the hard way that your past performance means nothing to the new person and they might want to bring in their own people for you to train for a couple of months before you are forced to resign for "performance issues".

    Also update that resume.

    Good luck with your job. Durham is a nice area. My uncle lived there for decades and some of my cousins still do.

  • Just have your resume ready. Odd as it seems you are better off all ready to jump than hitting the panic button in December.

    You have a 6 month head start on networking and getting that 1 year in with the compnay. If they crash and burn before then your resume says you were unlucky to take a job with a company that closed shop.

    If I'm you I find out how long their P&G contract has left. (and other contracts if they have any). If its through July you are golden. See how many other customer projects are in the pipeline. That will tell you how healthy they truly are.

    P&G has too many products to be careless with finding suppliers like the one you currently work. P&G has warts like every company but the SOB's know retail marketing and they don't often get caught with displays they are unable to deliver because back in Cincy there will be blood and that's a career killer for whoever hired the company you are working for currently.

    I live in a decent apartment.. But yea I agree there are some amazing houses. I want the job they are doing, seems more fun.

    I've already been letting some of my friends know, who work for bigger companies.

    I met with the CEO, he briefly mentioned that i'm not going anywhere and they like what I bring to the table. But the problem I see is having a 25 year old boss. I'm not throwing his achievments down the drain, he's been through the good and tough times in the past 2 years. But that being said, id like to learn from someone that has 5-10 years experience.

    We just got out of a 3-month probation period(which I wasn't aware of until after I joined.... grumble). We got out of it, and P&G said that we made a lot of progress and like what we are doing.

    I will def. update my resume this weekend.
