GM accounting question.

  • I heard some disturbing news this weekend and would like verification if possible? As I understand it, GM counts a vehicle as sold and reports each vehicle as sold to the govt. when it is driven off the assembly line, not when it leaves a showroom. If true, then the public is being lied to by both GM and the Govt. Perhaps this explains all of the vehicles parked in fields behind the covered railroad cars?

    GM sells cars to dealers.

I don't know where the FOB point is but it could be the door of the assembly plant.

If the car is being produced due to a dealer order then the FOB would be at the door of the assembly plant. If it is produced as stock inventory, then FOB would be the dealer lot.

You're just now figuring this out?

Hate to break it to you but Car companies have been doing this forever. Not just GM.

Since we are all distant shareholders I thought it to be somewhat relevant and interesting. I can't believe that the SEC allows them to report in this manner?

huh Have you ever taken an accounting class? A manufacturer would only hold the inventory on its books and record a retail sale to non-B2B customer if the inventory was held by the retailer on consignment, which is not the case with auto dealers. Auto dealers own their own inventory.

Do you think Oscar Meyer books a sale when Kroger sells you a package of hot dogs?

Let me get this down, $100 million. Oh wait, I have a better idea. Instead of $100 million, how about I send you a hobo's dick cheese?

I wouldn't chalk this up to left-wing (although I know you'd love to). Rob has shown his conservative roots in many a thread.

Let's just agree that he has no fucking clue and let it go shall we?

When I drive past a GM plant and see hundreds of cars sitting in a field and they are booked as sold it causes me to wonder bit.

GM builds most of it's cars to fill dealer orders and they can build them faster than they can ship them. Now you can quit wondering.

  • rob,
Here's the way the US auto sales numbers work:
Car goes off the line and into a storage lot.
Dealers are given at least twice a week updates of what is available to fill in their inventory ia addition to the relatively few cars ordered with specific options.
Dealer places orders from manufacturer inventory.
Vehicles are considered sold as soon as the manufacturer receives the money wire from the dealer's bank or the okay from their credit department since some dealers purchase on floor plan.

All those vehicles you see on new vehicle lots are considered sold because the dealer is really an authorized reseller.
