Homeless girl makes it into Harvard...

  • And she didnt whine, and "occupy" begging for life to be fair. Instead, when faced with horrible life circumstances and terrible parents, worked as a school janitor and studied with the determination to succeed. This is one amazing young woman.

  • So she's not taking the free tuition?

  • Harvard gives free tuition to students from low income families. http://www.thelifefiles.com/2010/10/18/harvard-university-announces-free-tuition-for-undergraduate-students-from-low-income-families/

As a private institution, they can do whatever they want. If only the lazy dirty hippies would get into Harvard, they could have free tuition too.

Great story. Believe it or not, this type of story happens more often than you think. Take a look at the admissions profiles from the top private institutions and you will find a lot of equally impressive stories.

However, what does this have to do with a protest movement such as the "occupy" movement?

Wow hard work being rewarded and fairly! Ill assume if this was a public college you would be upset becuase she might be accessing some of your tax dollars?

Really nice fishing. Between this and your golf stories I don't know where to begin. Why you try to compare the working world between a game and a ivy leauge school is beyond me. My personal experience's have seen huge differences between all 3. Maybe you can draw some parallel's from your life, but I can't.

  • She went to public high school. She qualifies for a Pell Grant too. What a freeloader, eh connies?

Oh, and FishHead, if you'd been to a OWS rally you'd have met law school grads, MBA's, college grads, etc. But keep up the lie, you r good a that.

meanwhile you are just a regular idiot?

As long as you get killer test scores, have a stellar GPA and write a good essay Harvard will give you a look.
Its not as heartwarming as msux2 wants us to believe it is Harvard accepts an incoming freshman class based on test scores, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, nationality, income demographics and even region and state.

I know a kid who was told by Harvard thanks but no room for you. They had filled their spots for middle income white males from the South East who weren't athletes or legacies.. (He's from Alabama) 35 ACT / 2350-2375 area for SAT. He went to another school on a full ride and the only 2 schools to reject him were Harvard and Stanford.

WTF does this have to do with my post? And how does it make me an idiot? Is the girl in question not white, and was TrapperGus not making a grossly incorrect assumption?

And several of my family members (including both of my siblings) have been accepted and rejected by Ivy League schools. I'm aware of how admissions work at those places, and it isn't nearly as much of a conspiracy as you'd like to think.

A homeless person getting into Harvard is indeed a "heartwarming" story because of the amount of work and dedication it takes to get into a place like that without having been privileged in the first place.

    arfabe16

  • why was he an idiot?

Assuming the person was a minority goes on all the time. Here and in real life.

She was a teenager bouncing from place to place and if you would look closely I'll bet you could find several HS juniors or seniors who hope to be college bound in the same situation in the school district where you reside.

msux2 wants us to get all teary eyed about this kid but tomorrow he'll soon be singing the praises of Romney/Ryan budgets that will reduce opportunities for kids like her by taking away more social safety nets and cutting things like Federal Aid for higher ed and K-12. No higher ed money means she doesn't get the Pell Grants, cuts to K-12 means maybe those teachers and counselors numbers get cut and the next kid like her falls between the cracks because we can't afford that any more.

Nope. As GRR said, having put children into elite schools I'm well aware that with the schools no longer able to use direct quotas for minorities they target poor people hoping that most of them are monirities which is a pretty good bet...if they didn't have a policy like that she wouldn't get the finanical support she will need to attend...and Harvard would be full of Mittens types only...

  • Glad to see the libs out in full force neg-bombing the messenger of hard work, self reliance, and determination when all I did was post a success story. You guys really are pathetic. Trapper assumes the girl is a minority because she was homeless, GRR knows someone who got screwed by Harvard (who doesnt he know right?) and Enrique, the defender of public cop car defacators and general whiners appears unimpressed with this young woman. She should have just gotten knocked up and went on welfare so the libs would have a solid democratic voter on the rolls for life.

lol you just keep being more and more incorrect... "they target poor people HOPING that most of them are monirities [sic]" lollol

Luckily, I have two siblings who applied to Harvard (one got in and one didn't) and know what the Common Application looks like.

On page 1, they specifically ask you your race/ethnicity. They knew this chick is white. Oh, and they don't know very much about your financial status until AFTER they've accepted you (although I guess they could make some assumptions based on school district, but that's really too much work when over 30,000 people apply every year). All they ask in the application is whether you'll apply for need-based financial aid or not... but the vast majority of people (even upper middle class people) need some sort of financial aid, so the admissions committee doesn't know if you'll need a couple grand per year or if you need all of your tuition covered.

Harvard and a few other schools (UPenn, Yale, and MIT come to mind) make a commitment to cover 100% of your need IF you get accepted. So once you're accepted, they review your financial documents and make the decision on how much you need and how much they'll give you. It would be a pain in the ass (and trust me, Harvard doesn't do this) to review 34,000 financial aid forms just to find poor people that they "hope will be minorities" lol.

Please stop making things up if you have no idea what you're talking about.

Harvard told him they had already reached their quota of South Eastern middle class non athlete/legacy white kids? Wow...at least they were honest. I wonder if anyone at Harvard got fired for that letter? Did he go to the papers with it? It seems like that would have been national news, but then again it is Alabama...

    Why didn't Stanford take him?

Also, I didn't realize the SAT gave a "range" score. When did that start?

    Good morning asshole.

I know the SATscore was above 2350 and below perfect. He was a National Merit Scholar.

He didn't get a letter saying that. I never said that in the post. Break a leg jumping to conclusions? He got on the phone and talked to the admissions offices at both schools. Harvard told him how they put their classes together based on percentages taking a lot of things into consideration including family income, state, legacey, athletics.

Oh boy. You know the process because you know people who have applied...Harvard cannot take race into account since the UofM case...so they use other means...that you don't see them on the application is because they don't want you to see them.

Howere as a big hint to you...lots of orginizations us Zip codes to classify the population.

Oh dear. People really love conspiracy theories. They DO ask for your race. They know. They knew this girl was white before they accepted her. They weren't hoping she was a minority, as you so eloquently suggested.

So if he was from Alabama he obviously didn't play football for you at Rockford. Just wondering, how do you get all the intimate details about everyone you meet in life? You are great friends with just about everyone from professional athletes to smart high school kids in Alabama and you know their entire life histories and the details of every telephone conversation they have had. Amazing.
