How Good a General was Patton?

Rewatching "Patton" with G. Scott...
He seems like the best thing since sliced bread but how goos was he in real life?

Patton was smart, came from a family with history of military education and was a student of military history. A smart general who couldn't work well with others which is why, despite his battlefield wins, the Pentagon passed him over for promotions to high command while Eisenhower and others got larger commands.
The fact he died shortly after the war concluded added to the legend.

The Germans really were scared as hell of him. He was a very good general, but a lousy politician, which is why he was always in trouble with the more politically astute higher ups.

I guess that is one vote that he was really good...the Germans couldn't believe that he wouldn't be the invasion commander...

Patton was excellent strictly in the sense of if you gave him some recruits, a pile of guns and something to shoot at, he would do very, very well. That being said, he had absolutely zero sense of diplomacy and would have struggled if his role had required any tact whatsoever. The guy was, simply put, a sledgehammer.

He was a man for the times. A great leader but not a "team" player. If you wanted it done, George would get it done, his way.

According to one thing I read the Germans thought the Americans didn't play fair because the Americans used artillery to blast the Gernman positions instead of fighting man to man...
