How many openly / admittedly Gay friends do you have?

  • Actual friends? 1.

But my sister and one of my friends have a bunch of gay friends, so I know a lot of gay people.

I'm not gay (and even if I were, the gay community is diverse in its viewpoints as is any collection of people, so it's not like one gay person can speak for the entire community), but I think the push for gay marriage is about giving same-sex relationships the same level of societal respect that is given to hetrosexual relationships. Even if they have access to domestic partner benefits, and even if the DOMA were repealed and gay couples were able to take advantage of tax breaks, probate/estate advantages, and other advantages given to married hetro couples, our society gives a different level of respect to a couple that makes the decision to get married. Gay couples who have made the decision to establish a permanent home for themselves (and their children, if any), want a public, immediately recognized and respected symbol of that. Because "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" carries a much different meaning than "person who I have shared my life with for the past 30 years".

I guess I just don't view the law as the way to go about this. I don't take social cues from the titles a state or governmental entity gives something. Instead, why don't they get married via religious venues. If there aren't religions that are on board with this, then start their own religion. I don't mean to be rude, I guess it's just hard for me to understand.

While this guy is clearly portraying himself as an asshole, to discriminate against anyone for religious views is equally as bad as discriminating against anyone.

Fail. I didn't discriminate. Trying to find any rationale an educated person could have against another based on sexual preference.

Religion is the only (non) answer I could see. I'm Irish catholic btw.

  • I've had season tickets to the Women of Sparta since 2001. I'm the only non-homosexual I know. OK, except for my wife. I'm pretty sure.

maybe I just know a non-representative sample. And I'm not talking about "bi because I'm drunk and it gets guy's attention if I make out with another girl" types or lesbians in pornos. I'm talking about stable, partnered/married women who also happen to be beautiful/sexy. Sure, there are unattractive lesbians out there, but there are a ton of unattractive hetro women too.

  • No close friends. But socially, probably hang with 7 or 8. The best man in my first wedding still hasn't come out, but I'm 60% sure he is. Every time I think its been a while since I've seen him around a girl, he goes and gets a girlfriend.

People toss around the word discrimination too much. Not agreeing and/or disliking someone for their views is not "discrimination" in the way I think you are using it.

I like boobs you liar, but ive known a few gays in my day (non gayily). A buddy I used to go hunting with who I met through work at State his dad had a big farm in the thumb. Anyways, he was the youngest of three sons in his family, killed the biggest and most deer of his two older brothers, gave his dad his first grandson, and liked dudes butts. He was the butchest gay dude ever though.

Definition: to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit

To dislike or disrespect someone based on their religious beliefs absolutely is discrimination. If I were to tell someone that I don't like them because they're black, that would be inappropriate, don't you agree?

Being in the arts i know more gays and lesbians than you can shake a ....er, never mind. Anyway, i'm sure there's no "ugly lesbo" gene, but it is very noticeable that the mainstream lesbian style aesthetic is NOT what most straight folk would find "pretty". That's probably what all the wisecracking about ugly lesbians stems from.

Exactly. Funny how that works isn't it? In actuality we're all prejudice in one way or another. I'm not religious at all unless we're talking about MSU football. I'm about as prejudice as they come. Call it ignorant if you want but just like a fag is born gay, I was born judgmental so be as hypocritical as you want. Our society is very good at judging somebody based on first impression. The key is being able to re-evaluate and not let that first impression be a long-lasting one. If somebody is gay I have no problem with it. I might be homophobic but so what? I've known many people who were closet gays as long as I'd known them. The minute you find out they're gay you take a step back and say "really?" How many people have been in the friend zone with some chick you want to bang/be in a relationship with and when they find out it ruins your friendship? It's really no different than that. I actually do know a few people that are gay and it's not weird at all. If they started talking to me about dicks and rating guys, ya it's more than weird and I'm never considering them a friend again.
