How much of our income goes towards taxes?

  • I would prefer this stay here, and not go to Wells. The political grandstanding BS will clutter it up.

    Ever think about this?

OK, you get your check, you are already 25-35% lighter in the wallet due to Federal, State, FICA and Medicare taxes.

So you have you "post-tax" income to live on. That income is taxed repeatedly.

Buy groceries, buy a car, pay your utilities and cable bill, go to the tanning bed, have a beer, put gas in your car, buy a cigar, own a home, it is all taxed.

Save for retirement, you are taxed when you take the money. Sell stocks and make a profit, taxed. Die, your estate is taxed in some states and depending on your worth.

Win the lotto, taxed (if you win alot).

So, how much of what we take home do we actually get to keep? 20-30%? I don't know the number, but if you think about the big picture, it's pretty disgusting.

To think we all pay taxes on almost everything we buy and do, and the States and Federal Government are in that much trouble, is sickening.

Why do you go to the tanning bed?

  • what about products you buy...taxes are built in to the retail price.

I only threw in the tanning bed reference because it is so absurd.

  • If you pay cash for every round of beer, they usually don't charge you tax.

Pervis, you are one screwed up individual.

I saw your thread to mock this thread, which BTW was quickly locked.

If you have nothing better to do than mock other threads with bullshit, I pity you. I guess you like being taxed out of your ass and getting nothing in return,

I was just having a little fun. If you're afraid to go to Wells and start a political thread, don't start a political thread.

    Seems reasonable to me. shrug

Taxes? Pfft. I hate having a military, roads, border protection, libraries, national parks, Social Security, schools, care for seniors, medical research, support for college students...

Well, OK, some of that I like. Can't we just have taxes to pay for the stuff that I like, and not for other stuff? TIA.

This. It's not like they're just taking your money and bathing in it- although some of you probably believe that.

Just going to post this to try to answer the question...it is broken down by income quartile however not trying to be political but just trying to answer the question...

edit - Do the MODS have my posting name on speed dial to Wells...not 30 seconds after I post a cute little chart on what was nowhere near a political thread...WHAM...

    Straw man argument.

I don't know of one conservative that opposes "a military, roads, border protection, libraries, or national parks." Medical research is also noncontroversial.

Social Security, schools, care for seniors, medical research, support for college students is another matter.

Schools are, and always have been, primarily a state and local responsibility. The funding for the Department of Education skyrocketed under Bush and continues under Obama. What has that achieved?

Social Security and Medicare are simply not financially sustainable. Every serious policy analyst left or right concedes that. Only demagogues dispute this.

  • Sadly most people can't tell you how much they pay in taxes.

I've always contended that if everyone had to write a check to the govt every month for taxes, as they do for every bill, the level of dissatisfaction of govt would dwarf the cable companies. But the govt would rather you just be ignorant...they would rather have their cut before we all get our hands on our hard earned pay.

I don't make that distinctions between corporations and govt. They all take advantage of you at every interval they can. If either of them are able to corner a market deemed necessary, they're going to monopolize on it and bleed it dry... then move on.

I think we call those... 'vampires'.

The fact is that some people support some things the taxes buy and other people support different things the taxes buy. In general it is hoped that everyone is getting some of what they want the government to be doing by paying taxes...

What to me seems ignorant are people who think that the taxes should only support what they believe in but not what other people who also pay taxes believe in.

Seperately from the comment on allocation and results...anyone who looks at Social Security on a factual basis will see that it is easily substainable...

As is MediCare although to substain it will require more near term actions...

People who are fearmongering will use the 75 year planning projections for both as being 100% accurate while at the same time they are all over the lack of accuracy at the CBO estimates for the last 10 years.

A third point would be that you said that Conservatives support certain items...and you gave a list...it could be that Ron Paul does not support everything on that list.
