Jon Stewart mocks Romney's wealth...when he is worth $80 million

  • I like Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. It leans left, yes, but it is still pretty funny. I just like satire in general. But Stewart mocking the rich is semi-ironic.

You're absolutely right...unforunately these days single mothers living on foodstamps IS the American Dream

Ha. My beef is that who fucking cares if Romney is rich! If you were worth $50 million, would you care if people bashed you for making a good living for yourself and your family? And Stewart is a hypocrite for mocking the rich when he is, in fact, even more rich.

That's like Michael Jordan saying, "Damn, that Kobe Bryant gets any deal he wants. That guy has a lot of damn cash."

  • To be fair, he has writers that probably write much of the rich-bashing stuff. Still kind of hypocritical for it to come out of his mouth, but I love the dude so much that I'm willing to overlook it. Hypocrisy doesn't necessarily invalidate whatever point he may be trying to prove either.

I'd agree with your first point, but why even bring it up? Bring up his policies, bring up Bain Capital, bring up his health care plan...what do his assets have to do with anything besides campaigning? Obama gets fundraisers thrown by George Clooney, probably in the top three of richest actors in the world. I would just like the focus to be on something worthwhile, even if it is a satirical news program.

I'm 99% in agreement with you, I don't think Romney's astronomical wealth has much to do with whether or not he's better than Obama. The Daily Show's writers are simply looking for material, and ever since all the stooges dropped out, it's getting harder to come by. Romney being out of touch with the average American is about all they've got left. Obama is gonna get off easy, because it's fairly clear that Stew Beef prefers him to Romney, so they've gotta find something. Other than Romney's rather robotic people skills, his wealth (and the way he obtained it) is about the only thing "wrong" with him.

The sad truth is that our government has become government of the people, by the wealthy, for the wealthy. The wealth difference between Obama and Romney is only a small degree compared to either's distance from the median income. Not to mention that Obama is beholden to Wall Street, and Romney will be too, if elected. The sorry state of campaign finance has ensured that anyone who wants to be president absolutely has to whore themselves out.

  • Sorry, but this seems like a bogus point. Certain types of righties always get out their hankies and start boo-hooing because this or that liberal said something mean about rich people. Between sobs, they rue the unfairness of people denigrating wealth in a country where it's everyone's dream to get filthy rich, etc. Then they play the "envy" card, and then the "socialist" card, etc.

Here's the thing. They are either fiendishly clever at framing the debate or they are kind of dense. Why? Because the person who has offended them is almost never simply vilifying the rich for being rich. The person is vilifying them for some dick-headedness related to their wealth.

Now, while I don't follow Jon Stewart closely, that is almost certainly the case here. I watched the video the Daily Caller linked as evidence that Stewart was a hypocrite because, despite being rich, he was allegedly making fun of Romney for being rich. The thing is, Stewart wasn't making funny of Romney simply for being rich. Stewart was making fun of Romney for being one of the rich people who is constantly working the political system to get a lower and lower tax burden and then pays the lower tax burden using the justification that he is only playing by the rules of the tax code--you know, the one he helped game.

In this video, Romney had just released his tax returns, which (if I remember correctly; I'm not gonna replay it) showed that he had paid 14% taxes on his $43 million in earnings over the previous two years. The Daily Show then went on to show how a huge lobbying effort had killed a bill (with a GOP co-sponsor!) to raise the tax on private equity distributions (right term?). Bain Capital was a part of that lobbying effort and Romney went on record as saying he opposed the bill. It's all there on the tape.

So what's the problem with the Daily Caller? Are they really dense, or just really disingenuous?

I don't see Stewart donating millions to buy political elections so that he can get favorable treatment for his industry even if it's at the detriment of society as a whole. Therein lies the difference.

I guess the GOP hates rich people if they don't line up with their ideology. No surprise.

are they asking for laws to be implemented just for them and their industries? What are they trying to gain by donating? That is the test.
