Racism & Michelle Obama

I'm glad you are challenging me on this, because it's forcing me to think things through.

    I'll counter with:
    http://www.healthofchildren.com/S/Stranger-Anxiety.html#b
Essentially a normal developmental stage for all humans.

In essence you are right in the first regard, you are not born this way, but wrong in the second....you don't have to be taught as you will automatically develop a negative reaction to strangers.

While I agree that children do become more careful as they gain in age I believe that this is due to both development of the nervous system and experence together...in a very non threating culture it might be that this trait would be subdued.

Perhaps true in part - however to justify it with an comment such as this is to excuse it and accept it.

    Racism is not acceptable.

Never said it was. But you can find anything on the internet these days. No reason to be surprised about it.

I think that's correct.....if you are raised to understand what happens you can change your behavior

So even the most racist comments about the First Lady are okay by you, because of...uh...Reverend Wright?

There exists more ignorance in our country than racism without a doubt. She doesn't care about her own race, she's an opportunist and her past actions give plenty of evidence to support it. If she cared half as much about poor black folk as you make it out to be there'd be a lot more progress. The fact that she took 350K a year re-directing low-income patients in Chicago to "community" hospitals while reserving its own beds for those with big insurance plans and/or money is outright shameful. This policy of patient-dumping is something that normally is reserved for crackas, that's about the only reason I can think of to explain why the media chose not to go after UCMC's racist policy...

Well said. Furthermore, if you are going to live in a country that allows unrestricted freedom of speech then it's inevitable that hate speech will always exist as a by-product. Now you can live in a country like England where it's possible to be arrested for the quotes the OP copied and pasted...but give me a country like the US and the First Amendment right of its citizens over any other, I don't want to see entertainers like rap artists doing time for writing lyrics that could be classified as hate speech

You spend an awful lot of time agonizing over what the First Lady cares about. That's amusing, in a pathetic sort of way.

Yeah, and my posts are filled with worry over what Michelle Obama is secretly concerned about.

Do you make sure to tell everyone you know that the First Lady doesn't care about her own race and did a lot of "shameful" stuff in Chicago, or do you save all of your outrage for this board?

  • Wait a minute, I thought she married a Muslim.

    MUSLIM!!! scared

Michelle Obama has been the most targeted and attacked First Lady in history. "Moochelle," "Munchelle," altering photos of her, outrage over her clothing and wearing dresses without sleeves, and now the manufactured Olympic controversy, ignoring that Laura Bush did the same thing and it's tradition among First Ladies. More racism and hate at a strong African-American woman.

However, she has handled all the vitriol with grace and dignity.

Wait, didn't your first post in this thread say that the problem with racism was that people cited it in instances where it wasn't present? You follow that up by accusing Michelle Obama of holding back the black community by perpetuating racist policies? Kind of seems like you're contributing to the very problem that you cited. Nicely done.

So you're saying policies that adversely affect poor blacks ISN'T racism? That's funny, I've always heard only the opposite. If that's the case then I'll certainly retract my statement. It's just hard to keep up with what constitutes as racism in today's day and age. But that's good to know, it's been LONG overdue. In light of this recent news I will retract my previous statement

I start with the following: - Humans prefer to associate with and depend on folks who are culturally and racially similar to themselves - Humans are naturally suspicious of folks that are culturally and racially different from themselves - thus it is easier to assign ill intent to any given set of actions - The ability of any given human to overcome this preference and suspicion varies from one human to the next

I came across this article: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/michelle-obama-lead-u-delegation-olympic-games-opening-172541213.html

What got me was the comments - from the mild: - Another taxpayer-funded vacation for Michelle. - This is the same as giving Obozo the nobel peace prize - Did this make anyone else nearly smack their face on their keyboard in shock at how utterly moronic and hypocritical this woman is? - That's funny, It's called, Follow the BIG BUTT - Last I heard Mooochelle isn't the President

To the factually incorrect: - She is not even an athelete. This is an honor accorded to an athelete - vacation#500 in 3 1/2 years in the white house - I wont tune in to watch Michelle lead anything Nor Her Anti-Christ Husband (I could be wrong here...maybe Fish knows if the POTUS is the Anti-Christ?)

To the downright offensive: - Sasquatch leading humans. - a monkey leading great OLympians - It's just another tax payer paid vacation for Chewbaca Obama - Chewbacca with a watermellon, leading the pack should be funny - Bob Cook · Top Commenter · The Ohio State University...Nice they have opened it up to sasquatches too - More vacation time for the first Wookie.

Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton all represented us at various olympics....I suspect if I could find comments on articles related to them I'd find both mild and factually incorrect statements mixed in there, but I doubt we'd see the sort of virulent personal attacks...so why I wonder does this first lady generate such passionate hate....I think the simple answer is racism?

My suggestion would be to be lend very little creedence to anonymous comments on the internet. They tell you absolutely nothing...

You're trying so hard to be balanced that you're overlooking the basic facts: the Republican Party (especially the conservative wing) consistently campaigns against issues that minorities support, they loudly voice their outrage over multiculturalism, immigration, affirmative action, etc

And you consider those activities to be racist? How?
