We are NOT the Greatest Country in the World

  • Great clip from the HBO series. In a moment of honesty he unleashes the truth that most Americans know in their heart today but do not discuss because you'd be considered "unpatriotic" if you do.

I've included a couple articles in the area of "truth telling". Wal-mart and food stamps and how prisons are America's new "growth" industry. Interesting statement on where we are as a country.

The one guy in clip says freedom is what makes us great. I would say we have much less freedom than many countries. With the Patriot Act, NDAA, TSA and the DHS, we are becoming a police state.

    Great question!

Wouldn't you have to live in every country (or at least a bunch of countries) to make that determination?? Who here has lived in more than one or two countries?

I do know one thing though - there is only one national embassy I've seen in foreign countries that has a line out front, and that's the embassy of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. So we must be doing something right over here.

BTW, why is it even important that we think of our nation as the greatest nation on earth (or not)?? Who gives a hoot?? I'm ok being second best to Norway or whatever the eff country wants to claim a better standard of living. I know I ain't moving there any time soon, even if they do have a better standard of living.

Well, I suppose you could create a metric based on constitutional freedoms, quality of life indices, culture, etc...

Sure, you could create all sorts of metrics, and people have already done so. But why does that matter?? Are we afraid of getting left behind by Norway?? Is anyone ready to move to Norway for more "freedom" and a higher standard of living?

The guy mentions Canada, Italy, Germany.....Is anyone here ready to claim that those nations are overall better than the USA?? I doubt it.

I think you're pointing to idealized perceptions based on past accomplishments and cultural characteristics. Those perceptions are lagging indicators. This country has to wake-the-ef-up but there are no indications that that's happening - quite the contrary. We're still a great nation but the star has lost luster and we are currently on the down elevator. Those lines you speak of will fade.

    Good clips, Mark.

It's important because this country's claims to exceptionalism have always influenced our policies both at home and abroad.

I mean, I'll bet you good money that after that jealous man made Leroy Brown look like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone, he comported himself a WHOLE lot differently.

Good post Vlad. I swear, you're starting to sound like a Tea Partier...wink_msu

Debates about whether America is the 'greatest country on earth' make me laugh. How do you define great? I've already heard that 'Newsroom' clip referenced a couple of times, by radio show hosts who treat it as some sort of epiphany from on high lol

Actually, I was the one who posed the question on Wells a few years ago whether this nation has seen its best years. That probably is the case, but the thought doesn't bother me all that much.

We had a good run, right?

wave and I'm still here (much to some of you guy's dismay)

That being said, I'd argue that we may still be the greatest country by many definitions of the term, but the overall bar is being lowered globally, and the gap to second place is shrinking rapidly.

Yes, a good run but what's happening now is painful to watch. I'd still like to see the phoenix rising w/o having to live through the ashes. A major test of the Churchill's observation.

    lol

That's another debate that's so much hot air. America is the exception? To what? To class distinctions? To economic recessions? To population growth? Military aggression? budget deficits?

Granted, we're one of few nations without formal nobility but we certainly have a Ruling Class. I love this country but I don't see the need to insist we are an 'exception' to the rest of the world.

I haven't watched the clip for about an hour (I had to run to the store), but I believe he mentions those countries in a specific context: freedom. I believe the setting is supposed to be Northwestern (again, I'm working from memory), and a "coed" asks, "What makes America the greatest country in the world?" The NRA guy on the stage with the Jeff Green character gives a one-word answer, "freedom." The implication is that we are the only country on the planet with freedom. The Green character gives a list of countries, including Canada, Italy and Germany, that are also functioning democracies, by way of shooting down that little bit of jingoistic hubris.

You have to go through a couple of down years in order to get a premium position in the draft. Countries that try to rebuild on the fly, with journeymen and such, are doomed to eternal mediocrity.

  • The USA is where I was born, the USA is where I live, the USA is where I play. So it's No. 1 for me. I suspect Italians, Norwegians, and Germans feel the same way about their countries.

Like MF and others, I laugh when people say we're the greatest nation in the history of the world. According to whom? And by what definitions? And, more important, who cares? We are what we are ... let's just be the best we can be.

    I disagree!

The United States and the combined ideals from which it was created still drive us to exceptionalism.

We invade Iraq for all the wrong reasons, and yet in the end no one really argues we should remain as an ocuping power...we maintain our core belief that the Iraq population has the God given right to determine their own lives...we will of course have influnce but it is their country, not ours...this is the core ideal of our exceptionalisum...we have infectived others with parts of our ideals but one only needs to watch the EU trying to deal with its issues to see that while they intellectually agree, we believe...like the shot on the movie Pearl Harbor where the power of the few to create belief is what we do...the EU doesn't step up to the ideal...

The United States has idealized Matther's ideals and Washington's wisdom into a belief which we follow...can anyone of us invaitsion the United States with a permenate occuppation of a country with no exit plan...

It's super easy to get a permanent resident visa for Canada as an American. I got one a few years ago. Had to go to Buffalo for an interview but in most cases it's not required Vancouver is as solid a city as you'll find anywhere in the US ( less NYC of course )
