Why do Libs hate Mormons?

  • I thought Libs love minority groups. Mormons are a minority group. Why aren't Libs excited about the historic nature of the first Mormon president?

They routinely stand up for Muslims for the same reason.

I don't get it. Please explain this.

I'm curious...do you have some link to back up "libs hate Mormons"?

From my perspective it's conservative religious folks who take issue with Romney's faith.

  • No hate, they're just hilarious. Here's what Mitt believes:

He believes that Jesus Christ is Satan's brother.
He believes that God lives near a planet called "Kolob."
He believes in baptizing dead people.
He believes that Jesus is married to a goddess wife.
He believes that The Garden of Eden was in Missouri.
He believes that it was impossible for Negroes to go to Heaven before 1978.
He believes that Jesus has children from his wife or wives.
He believes that he is going to become a god.
He believes he will own his own personal planet after he dies.
He believes the real Christian God is not eternal but rather that He was once a man on some other planet besides Earth!
He believes he needs to wear magical underwear created by Mormons and he is never to take it off unless he is bathing.
He believes it is a sin to drink anything containing caffeine.
He believes children between the ages of 18-21 should wear name badges, ride bicycles and always smile.

Dude. You are on a roll (can we get a high five smilie?). Your keen insight into the liberal psyche is phenomenal. It must be because of your brilliant and precise definition of Liberals. You have inspired me to look deeper into my consciousness and become aware of all my hidden feelings. I am now aware of how much I fear Sarah Palin, how much I hate the Christian agenda and now how much I hate Mormons. Thank you. This explains so much. I now understand that when I occasionally hit my Mormon "friend" (should I start calling him my frienemy?) while playing racquetball it is because of a deep seated hatred. Well, I also sometimes hit my Muslim friend when we play and I think liberals are supposed to love Muslims so now I'm a bit conflicted. Can you please explain it to me?

  • I think it might have to do with Utah having the highest percentage of Mormons (approx 60%) and also being the most charitable state per capita. It conflicts so much with the compassionate liberals like VEEP Biden who charges the Secret Service $12,000 in rent to live on his property but only manages to give $329 a year to charity. Or Al Gore with his $353 annual charitable contributions. I guess I would hate a group that makes my heros look so cheap and hypocritical too.roflmao

Not a Mormon but I live in a community with a fairly sizable population and I work, socialize and play sports with quite a few. I've been to many of their services, social events and "weddings" (in each case, they had a local ceremony for everyone and the actual wedding was at temple - for members only). I would say your perception is fairly accurate on a lot of issues. However, their population is quite diverse in their views and I know a lot of Mormons who are very liberal in their view of the major topics of the day. As with any faith, some of them are strict adherents to all tenets of their faith and others are less strict. Oh, and while we are on the topic, since I play sports with quite a few guys, I think I can safely say that none of them wear magic underwear.

  • Libs have a hard-on for Muslims? Most libs I know are suspicious of anything that smells of militaristic/imperialistic overreach (so are those GOPers who back Ron Paul), and so have bad-mouthed a lot of U.S. policy in the Middle East. On the other hand, most libs (especially white libs), I know are fairly secular and very uncomfortable with fundamentalists of whatever stripe (Christian or Muslim). The only Muslim teacher at the high school I work at just finished a fellowship at a university that was paid for with a grant from the Koch Bros. The only Muslim student I've had in the last couple of years was devout (i.e., wore a veil and talked about her religious devotion a lot) AND extremely socially conservative. I have no idea what political leanings her family has, but I very much doubt that they hobnob with "libs." They might appreciate the fact that liberal politicians are a lot less likely to start wars that will ultimately kill hundreds of thousands of people in their country of origin, though ...

OMG! The Tea Party's big issues are deficits, taxes (TEA = Tax Enough Already) and a concern for the government being too large. Most of them haven't invested heavily into the social issues at all. I am sure you could find a few exceptions but that is not the norm.

Now we actually have posters that think the TEA party is running the country? How is that possible since the Dems still have the WH and Senate? Also the GOP didn't even control the House until January 2011. panicpanic

    1) The idea that the Tea Party is neatly divorced from the more socially conservative wing/s of the Republican Party is a nice fiction. I don't come on Wells often, but I'd bet money that issue has been addressed ad nauseum on here.

    2) You asked why the Progressive Caucus wasn't willing to stoke the anti-Muslim rage. I replied by saying that as a lib I'm more concerned about the damage posed to our open society by our homegrown fundamentalists (i.e., rightwing Christian fundamentalists), which isn't to say that I'm completely unconcerned about radical Islamicists. I am much more confident with Obama's approach to that threat than that of House reactionaries. ALSO, I said that I am more worried about the threat the Tea Party poses to this country than Islamicists. Again, the Tea Party is closer to home. They are, in their worst incarnations, a collection of Ayn Randian libertarians with no appreciation of, or investment in the greater social good AND crony capitalists AND white-shoed, tax-dodging, let-the-buyer-beware money grubbers AND, yes, Moral Majority types.

the tea party is made up of alot of libertarian leaning conservatives so you need to think twice on that one.
