Woman fired from teaching job for attempting to get pregnant

  • This poor gal was fired because she was undergoing IVF treatments.
    http://news.yahoo.com/teacher-fired-receiving-fertility-treatments-211311476--abc-news-topstories.html

Her employers don't believe in IVF because in many cases it leads to the destruction of embryos....however that did not occur during the course of her treatment....in essence she's been fired because when the process was used on other some other women it resulted in the destruction of embryos.

  • This is your 2nd thread in a couple weeks about a private school firing a teacher for moral reasons.

Why on earth do you think a private entity shouldn't be allowed to do this? Public school teachers often have "moral turpitude" stipulations in their contracts.

Should this chick be allowed to teach 8th graders?

Stacie Halas, a middle school science teacher at Richard B. Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, CA, was suspended by the school board while they investigated whether she starred in pornographic movies. Halas performed as Tiffany Six. Stacie Halas A California middle school teacher has been placed on leave after administrators learned from students that the educator appears in porn videos available online. She is now fighting to get her job back.

Yeah...this is post number two....both of these stories resonated with me for whatever reason.

Based on my op here how do you know I'm against it?...maybe I'm hugely in favor of eliminating a woman's economic livelihood for playing God with their eggs? (I'm kidding, obviously I think it's silly and unfair....the gal didn't even do the thing they're worried about, namely destroying unused embryos)

Thinking about your challenge regarding Mrs Halas I'd ask myself two questions:
    - does the fact that this woman "acted" in the porn industry so offend my moral sensibilities that I wouldn't want her teaching my 8th grade son? I only have boys so that's what I can speak to. Presuming what she did was in no way illegal it wouldn't bother me at all.
    - can the woman still be an effective teacher of young teenage boys? Different question, if the videos are available on line, I kind of doubt she could effectively control a class, and I'd imagine that a fair amount of these guys would find a way to watch the videos, and after that might be somewhat distracted in class.
In the end no, I don't think I'd want my boys in that class because I don't think she would be an effective teacher.

Of course the second bullet in no way applies to Emily Herx as what she did would not compromise her ability to teach kids.

I fail to see why she should be penalized by the school system for her out of school activities. Did she require her students to view the videos? Did she even tell her students about them? This is simply another case of an employer striving to control every aspect of an employees personal life. It is very reminiscent of what Henry Ford did in the 1920's. It was wrong then and it's just as wrong now.

These days... yes. I'm being completely serious.

I empathize with the woman, but the fact of the matter is those who control the resources (money) make the rules.

I wish things in this world were different, but unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. Unless you've been able to amass an amount of resources that allows you to be in control, you're just a pawn in their game. Since it's their game, it's their rules.

So there's no point in anyone standing up for what's right anymore, just throw in the towel and slink away? That is pathetic.

I don't know anyone in politics at that level. They're playing a game on a different field and my concerns probably don't concern them. I think you're over-estimating how much they actually care. It's a job, and a lucrative one... they're not going to bite the hand that feeds them.

When you work for a private institution, yes! That is one of the many rights as private institution has. The woman is exercising her right to sue that institution and let the courts handle it.

A Catholic Institution has a "moral" standard and they have their right to have like minded individuals work for them. IVF is a no-no for catholics and they provide other assistance to people who need help becoming pregnant.

And talking about the porn star and if they were a teacher.would you mind. It really doesn't matter what you would think because every school board in the country would make sure she is not in a classroom, even if she was a highly effective teacher. So even government institutions have a "moral" standing when it comes to employment.

Should your employer get to decide which food you eat, which car you drive, what type of house you get to live in, which neighborhood you have to live in, how many kids you must have, which schools the kids must attend, what type of clothes you must wear? That is where your and and xsanguine type thinking is leading. You seem to think that the government has no business dictating your life, but seem very content to selling yourself to a company. That's just sad.

In the article it says the Catholic Church is against destroying unused embryo's not IVF. They are assuming that IVF automatically means destroying the unused embryo's which is not the case with this woman.

This how the blatant hypocrisy of the Catholic Church or at least this monsignor. The Church encourages a husband and wife to procreate yet when they try to use the only viable means available she gets fired.

If the Holy See held this view for teachers who practce birth control they'd have to close every catholic school that wasn't only using priests and nuns.

The right of a private institution is to uphold what values it see's as important. If I worked for a company that tried to educate people against the killing and eating of animals, then went on a hunting trip and posted pictures of us hunting and eating our kill, that company would have the right to fire me because they deem me not to have the same values as them.

Most companies are not this strict in thinking because stricter rules you would lose a lot of talent. That is up for the company to judge though. In this instance the Catholic Church thinks having a woman doing something that is strictly against Chuch law is not the best example to have in their school, that is their right.

If people are unhappy at their company because of certain rules, they are free to leave. Does the company you work for require you to be at work at a certain time and leave at a certain time, isn't that dictating your life? (when you wake up, when you get to do errands) Companies dictate your life all the time.

No, but a private employer should be able to have rules and if you choose not to follow them you should be fired. Should the government be able to dictate these as well as what type of farm chores your teenager can do and type of sandwich and fruit your kids eat at school?

We have HIPAA rules in this country yet the churches get to side step this privacy rule and men in dresses get to dictate what their employees do with their vaginas. Disgusting abuse of power but abuse is prevalent in the Christian church so business as usual.

If you don't like it, don't be a member of the Catholic (not christian church as you said) Chuch and don't get a job working for them.

  • I'm confused by this "they are a private institution, they can demand employees live by whatever code they want" argument. Are there not lines here, lines that courts have drawn regarding personal freedoms? Could they say, fire her for marrying a black man?
