Youngstown (OH) Ursuline four-star quarterback Chris Durkin has committed to the Spartans his father tells 247Sports.
The 6-foot-4, 216-pound Durkin is still on Michigan's State campus until Friday morning.
"About halfway through (today's) practice, and we had already sat through team meetings, quarterback meetings and now we're on the field and Christopher walked over to me and smiled at me and said dad I think I'm home," Chris Durkin Sr. said. "He said lets lock this up."
Ranked by the 247Composite as the nation's No. 11 pro-style quarterback Durkin becomes the third commit for Michigan State in the class-of-2014, joining linebackers Deon Drake and Byron Bullough.
Other schools to offer Durkin included California, Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern. He visited Michigan State during the fall and the family went into this visit with the Spartans out in front.
"Proximity to home," the elder Durkin said. "There's a Youngstown connection there. Some of that staff is familiar with Youngstown State football and Youngstown, so there was that family feel there. Christopher is interested in medicine so we had the opportunity to meet with multiple doctors on staff and everyone in surgery from orthopedic to regular M.D.s. From a lot of perspectives, Michigan State just made sense."
According to the elder Durkin, Michigan State is taking just one quarterback in this class.
"Christopher locked it up," he said. "They like the style of quarterback Chris brings, the toughness, the durability. They said for their offense and the direction they want to go, of all the guys they offered and were thinking about offering, none fit the mold better than Christopher."
